Casting Notice

BOY by Anna Ziegler

“Inspired by a true story, BOY explores the complicated terrain of trying to find love in a new body, and the inextricable bonds between doctor and patient. In the 1960s, a well-intentioned doctor convinces the parents of a male infant to raise their son as a girl after a terrible accident. Two decades later, the repercussions of that choice continue to unfold.” - Anna Ziegler, BOY playwright

**Please Note: This show process will involve actors and production team collaboratively creating community agreements to foster a rehearsal space where listening, learning, and growing are at the forefront. Actors will also participate in learning about the LBGTQIA+ community and working with our Queer Theatre Consultant to make our production as informed and authentic as possible. By auditioning, you are agreeing to invest in that part of the show process.

Character Descriptions

Casting note from the Director: One of the main themes in this play is gender. I am interested in telling this story with trans and/or genderqueer voices. I believe the most authentic way to cast the production would be with an actor who has experienced a similar journey. The pronouns included below only refer to the characters as they are written.

Adam Turner: to play both Adam (as a young adult) and Samantha (as a child ages 6-14). Adam (he/him) is early-mid 20’s, gentle, earnest, troubled and self-educated. This character goes on a journey of gender identity. Adam and Jenny kiss. Samantha (she/her) is precocious, aware, and questioning.

Dr. Wendell Barnes: (he/him) Samantha’s psychiatrist. 40s-60s, highly educated and privileged. Warm and genial, passionate about his work and ideals, yet can be myopic regarding his own beliefs and career.

Jenny Lafferty: (she/her) Adam’s girlfriend. early-mid 20s, a bit toughened and wary, yet still hopeful for wonderful things. Single mom. Smarter and more perceptive than she lets on. Wants to be a good mother. Jenny and Adam kiss.

Trudy Turner: (she/her) Adam’s mother. 30s-50s, warm, lost, and hopeful. Trying to make sense of a confusing world and doing her best.

Doug Turner: (he/him) Adam’s father. 30s-50s, a man of not very many words, in over his head, just trying to get by, troubled.
